Metodología para la evaluación de riesgos sanitarios ante la contaminación fecal. OceanDocs
Delgado Gómez, Y.; Miravet Regalado, M.E..

Multi-Market Trading for Cooperative Resource Management: An Application to Water Pollution and Fisheries AgEcon
Horan, Richard D.; Shortle, James S..
Increasingly, environmental problems are recognized to involve linkages across multiple environmental variables (e.g., pollution and a fishery). Prior work on managing these complex, linked systems generally focuses on efficiency rather than implementation. However, implementation is important and will generally involve changing human behaviors within the multiple economic sectors that impact upon the multiple environmental variables. Tradable permit markets are generally seen as a coordinating mechanism, within a particular regulated sector, that enhances efficiency by incentivizing agents to respond to behavioral choices of others within the sector. However, prior work stops short of coordinating behaviors across multiple sectors for cases where...

Nematodes as indicators pollution: a case study from the Swartkops River system, South Africa OMA
Gyedu-Ababio, T.; Furstenberg, J.P.; Baird, D.J.; Vanreusel, A..
Nematodes from the sediments of the Swartkops estuary in Port Elizabeth, South Africa were investigated at 10 selected sites along a salinity gradient in the subtidal region at neap tide. The relation between nematode density, genera, community structure and environmental parameters including concentrations of seven heavy metals, Mn, Ti, Cr, Pb, Fe, Sn and Zn in the sediment were investigated. The nematode community structure was significantly influenced by the chlorophyll a concentration and sediment particle-size distribution. The number of genera had significant negative correlation with chlorophyll a and two heavy metals, Fe and Zn in the sediment. The habitat preferences of the genera were also assessed. A combination of the Shannon-Wiener Diversity...

Nitrogen fertilizer leaching in an Oxisol cultivated with sugarcane Scientia Agricola
Ghiberto,Pablo Javier; Libardi,Paulo Leonel; Brito,Alexsandro dos Santos; Trivelin,Paulo Cezar Ocheuze.
Nitrogen (N) leaching below the crop-rooting zone represents not only a valuable loss of nutrients for the plant, but also a potential pollution source of groundwater. The objective of this work was to quantify leaching losses of native N and that derived from fertilizer in an Oxisol that was cultivated with sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) during the crop plant cycle. The sugarcane was planted and fertilized with urea in the planting furrow, with 120 kg ha-1 of N. In order to determine the fate of the fertilizer - N, four microplots with 15N enriched fertilizer were installed. Input and output of N at the depth of 0.9 m were quantified from the flux density of water and the N concentration in soil solution. During the evaluation period the rainfall was...

Nivel de contaminación por hidrocarburos del petróleo en zonas costeras de Cuba OceanDocs
Rodríguez Martínez, R.; Torres Rodríguez, I.; Suárez Melo, Y.; García Fuentes, O.; Beltrán González, J..
The concentration of hydrocarbons of petroleum in marine sediments in areas of industrial, harbour and fishing interest to the N of the island of Cuba, as the bays of Cienfuegos, Port Father, Guantánamo, Matanzas with special emphasis in Sagua La Grande and Havana. The results showed high levels of contamination for these organic compounds in the bay of Havana, with a medium 1 220 mg·kg-1 dry matter. The biggest accumulations were in the creeks of Marimelena and Atarés. A tendency exists to diminish the degree of contamination for petroleum in these sediments. In the bay of Sagua La Grande the concentrations of total hydrocarbons were not high (averague 45 mg·kg-1 dry matter), and it allowed to classify to this ecosystem with very little influenced by...

Notes on the hematology of free-living Phrynops geoffroanus (Testudines: Chelidae) in polluted rivers of Southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ferronato,Bruno O.; Genoy-Puerto,Alexander; Piña,Carlos I.; Souza,Franco L.; Verdade,Luciano M.; Matushima,Eliana R..
Phrynops geoffroanus (Schweigger, 1812) is the freshwater turtle with the widest geographical distribution in South America. During 2006, physical examination and hematological evaluation were performed on free-ranging turtles from two polluted rivers, the Piracicaba River (n = 51) and its tributary Piracicamirim (n = 42), in southeastern Brazil. Red blood cell and thrombocyte counts, mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin levels differed in turtles from the two water courses. Although free-ranging turtles showed ectoparasites and boat propeler lesions, animals apparently had no signs of clinical disease. In spite of our results, further monitoring of the demography and health status of Phrynops geoffroanus in anthropogenically altered...

Optimal Soil Management and Environmental Policy AgEcon
Oueslati, Walid.
This paper studies the effects of environmental policy on the farmer’s soil optimal management. We consider a dynamic economic model of soil erosion where the intensity use of inputs allows the farmer to control soil losses. Therefore, inputs use induces a pollution which is accentuated by the soil fragility. We show, at the steady state, that environmental tax induces a more conservative farmer behavior for soil, but in some cases it can exacerbates pollution. These effects can be moderated when farmer introduces abatement activity.

Organic carbon and oil hydrocarbons in bottom sediments of Sevastopol Bay (the Black Sea) IBSS Repository
Osadchaya, T. S.; Ovsyaniy, E. I.; Romanov, A. S.; Ignatieva, O. G..
The paper summarizes data available from the literature and recently obtained about interannual variations of the content of organic carbon, chloroform bitumenoids and oil hydrocarbons found in bottom sediments of Sevastopol Bay (Black Sea). For the recent years the bottom sediment has been receiving a rich inflow of organic matter. Localities where organic carbon content is especially high appeared owing to special sedimentation conditions and unevenly distributed anthropogenic load on the bay's water area. As the result, such sediments have reductive properties which foster accumulation of bitumenoids and oil hydrocarbons.

Phytase in diets for Nile tilapia in the growth period R. Bras. Zootec.
Bock,Claudio Luiz; Pezzato,Luiz Edivaldo; Cantelmo,Osmar Angelo; Barros,Margarida Maria.
This research was carried out to compare the effect of phytase on performance, in the incorporation and excretion phosphorus in Nile tilápia. Four diets were used: one standard (contol), composed by 3,200 DE kcal ED/kg of ration and 30.0% CP and supplemented with phosphorus (4.0% of dicalcium phosphate), considering the treatment control, and others three, without phosphorus supplementation, with different phytase levels (1,000, 1,500, and 2,000 uf/kg), with four replication, per a period of 82 days. Circular tanks of fiber glass, with constant flow and aeration were used. The results demonstrated that the use of phytase in diets for fish production can reduce the levels of inorganic phosphorus in the diets and minimizing the impacts caused by phosphorus...

Policy Endogeneity and the Effects of Trade on the Environment AgEcon
Copeland, Brian R..
This paper reviews recent work on the implications of endogenous policy for the effects of trade on the environment and the sustainability of renewable resource stocks. A recognition that pollution policy is endogenous has had a major impact on the trade and environment literature and has reversed some of the previously established empirical findings. Work on pollution has proceeded faster than work on renewable resources. I suggest some directions for future work in this area.

Pollution and the Efficiency of Urban Growth AgEcon
Quaas, Martin F.; Smulders, Sjak.
We analyze the efficiency of urbanization patterns in a dynamic model of endogenous urban growth with two sectors of production. Production exhibits increasing returns to scale on aggregate. Urban environmental pollution, as a force that discourages agglomeration, is caused by domestic production. We show that cities are too large and too few in number in equilibrium, compared to the efficient urbanization path, if economic growth implies increasing aggregate emissions. If, on the other hand, production becomes cleaner over time (`quality growth') the urbanization path approximates the efficient outcome after finite time.

Pollution of wetlands in Tanzania OceanDocs
Mkuula, S..
Pollution of wetlands is becoming a serious concern, due mainly to the rapid increase ofhuman development activities. Although most extensive wetlands are in remote places where the human activities which lead to pollution of the environment are minimal, somehave become polluted by waste products related to development activities or humansurvival. In this paper, major types of pollution from human activities are considered, includingurbanisation, industrialisation, mining, agricultural activities and oil pollution. Proposals for combating pollution problems in wetlands are discussed with a focus onpolicy, planning and legislation; administration and institutional support; environmental research and technology; and improving information, environmental...

Potential of sunflower, castor bean, common buckwheat and vetiver as lead phytoaccumulators AGRIAMBI
Alves,Jailson do C.; Souza,Adailson P. de; Pôrto,Mônica L. A.; Fontes,Renildes L. F.; Arruda,Jandeilson; Marques,Luciano F..
ABSTRACT Studies concerning the tolerance, absorption and distribution of heavy metals in plants are essential for the success of phytoremediation programs. The present study was carried out in order to evaluate the potential of the sunflower, castor bean, common buckwheat and vetiver as lead phytoaccumulators. The species were grown in nutrient solution containing increasing doses of Pb (0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg L-1) during a 30-day exposure period. A completely randomized split-plot design was used, with a 4 x 5 factorial and three replicates. Significant reductions of dry matter of the root, shoot and whole plant were found in the all species under study as a function of the increased Pb doses. Vetiver showed higher tolerance to Pb contamination;...

Preliminary assessment of heavy metal levels in Mytella falcata (Bivalvia, Mytilidae) from Bacanga River estuary, São Luis, State of Maranhão, Northeastern Brazil BJB
CARVALHO,G. P. de; CAVALCANTE,P. R. S.; CASTRO,A. C. L. de; ROJAS,M. O. A. I..
The concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd were determined in the mussel Mytella falcata from the Bacanga River estuary, in order to evaluate the potential role of domestic effluents released "in natura" on the quality of the estuarine environment with consequences to shellfish resources. Cu concentrations ranged from 5.2 mg.g-1 to 13.1 mg.g-1, while Zn concentrations ranged from 49.1 mg.g-1 to 76.3 mg.g-1. Pb and Cd showed concentrations lower than 2 mg.g-1. The results showed low concentrations of Cu, Pb and Cd in the filter-feeding Mytella falcata in the study area in comparison with the maximum values stablished to foods by the Brazilian Government (Decree Law Nº 55,871). Finally, Zn presented slightly higher values than the maximum ones stablished by...
